Parliamentary rebellion that would have seen new agency compensate for aid budget cuts is thwarted
The government’s push to create the Advanced Research and Invention Agency has dodged a controversial amendment that could have thrown plans for the nascent funding body into turmoil.
The amendment, proposed by a group of eminent cross-party MPs, called for Aria to make up any shortfall in government spending on international aid. The move would have “irreparably damaged” Aria, the government told Research Fortnight ahead of the parliamentary debate on 7 June.
