Government seeks science base for asylum seeker age checks

   

Committee will analyse scientific methods such as X-rays in hugely controversial area of asylum policy

A team of researchers has been put together to advise the Home Office in the controversial area of how the age of asylum seekers can be verified.

Some politicians—including home secretary Priti Patel—say they believe that adults have posed as children to increase their chances of claiming asylum and access to benefits such as education. But the science of determining age is complicated and disputed, with current processes relying heavily on interviews.
