Sunak and von der Leyen discuss negotiating a solution to Northern Ireland protocol issues

The newly appointed prime minister Rishi Sunak has signalled he will take a friendlier approach to the EU—which has blocked UK membership to its R&D funding scheme due to a dispute over Northern Ireland.

At a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on 26 October, Sunak discussed negotiating a solution to the current issues around the Northern Ireland protocol.
