Questions raised over source of UK’s EU R&D stopgap funds

More cash expected ‘early in new year’ despite confusion over which budget it’s coming from

Politicians have expressed confusion over stopgap funding announced by the UK government last week to make up for delays in joining EU R&D programmes, as the science minister signals more funding will arrive in early 2023.

On 21 November, George Freeman announced £484 million to relieve pressure on universities and research institutions impacted by the UK freeze-out from the EU’s major R&D funding programme, Horizon Europe, as well as its nuclear research initiative, Euratom.
