Kwarteng and Donelan back Truss to become UK prime minister

Business secretary in charge of R&D and ex-higher education minister support Liz Truss’s tax-cutting agenda

Business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, whose brief includes R&D, and former higher education minister Michelle Donelan have both backed Liz Truss to become the next prime minister.

Ex-chancellor Rishi Sunak and foreign secretary Truss are currently battling to replace Boris Johnson as Tory leader and prime minister after the pair emerged in first and second place respectively in the final ballot of Conservative MPs.
