Ex-chancellor says “we need research base that is as vibrant as it needs to be”

Prime ministerial hopeful Rishi Sunak has hinted at maintaining support for a rising UK R&D budget, as he spoke of the importance of maintaining a “vibrant” research base.

Speaking at a Conservative leadership hustings event in Cheltenham on 11 August, the former chancellor said he wanted to have an economy “built on innovation”.
