
Warning of “significant further negotiation” before association can be confirmed
The UK R&D sector is seeking urgent clarity following a “historic” UK-EU deal over trade in Northern Ireland that could pave the way for association to EU science programmes.
On 27 February, prime minister Rishi Sunak hailed a “decisive breakthrough” after he and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen agreed the Windsor Framework, which “delivers free-flowing trade within the whole of the United Kingdom, protects Northern Ireland’s place in our union and safeguard’s sovereignty for the people of Northern Ireland”.
