Northern Ireland R&D spending fell in 2020

Real-terms fall in spending seen across business, higher education and government

Research and development spending in Northern Ireland decreased by 2.6 per cent in real terms between 2019 and 2020, according to official data released on 15 December.

Total Northern Irish R&D spending in 2020 was £913 million in 2020, compared with £937m in 2019 after adjusting for inflation. The figures were collected through a survey carried out by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, an arms-length body of the region’s government.
