Pressure to boost NHS R&D in health bill after Commons setback

            

Hopes pinned on Lords after government votes down strengthening of research provisions in NHS bill

Research organisations and MPs are lobbying for major health legislation going through parliament to strengthen research in the NHS, despite the government’s rejection of amendments to boost research.

A coalition of research organisations including royal colleges, universities, medical research charities and industry groups have been pressuring MPs to use the “once-in-a-decade” opportunity of the government’s Health and Care Bill to mandate the NHS to conduct clinical research. Currently, legislation from 2012 only requires the health service to promote research.
