Warwick report warns of looming R&D worker shortages for UK

Government-commissioned report finds around 400,000 jobs could need to be filled by 2027

The UK’s research sector could face a shortage of qualified workers over the short term if government policies to boost R&D activity are successful, according to an independent report commissioned by the business department.

R&D employment has been growing in the UK, even while spending has been stable, the report found. It estimated that if investment increases by around 20 per cent—only half of the government’s target of investing a total of 2.4 per cent of gross domestic product in R&D by 2027—around 400,000 jobs would need to be filled by that year.
