The geochemist seems a natural choice—but his oil executive past may cause concern

In many ways, the selection of oil and mining executive Andrew Mackenzie as chair of the national research funding agency, UK Research and Innovation, was a natural choice.

Described by one research policy expert as “super-smart, a brilliant strategist, and one of the biggest hitters in business today”, Mackenzie has both commercial nous and the academic credentials to back it up.
