Thousands urge UKRI to increase PhD stipends in line with inflation

Postgraduates say proposed increase in support for 2022-23 should be four times higher

Thousands of postgraduate researchers have urged national funder UK Research and Innovation to quadruple its proposed increase to its stipend for doctoral students struggling with crushing cost-of-living increases.

The minimum stipend for UKRI-supported doctoral students is set to increase from £15,609 per year in 2021-22 to £16,062 for the 2022-23 academic year, an increase of 2.9 per cent.
