‘Difficult to police’ copyright as free PhD theses listed for sale

Several universities affected by incident of doctoral work being sold online without their permission

Legal and academic experts have warned that copyright infringement of academic work is a “difficult area to police”, after several universities saw PhD theses listed for sale without the institutions’ or authors’ consent.

On 11 January Durham University told Research Professional News that it had asked the online retail giant Amazon to take down PhD theses that had been put up for sale by a third party.
