Skills bill amendments offer protection for BTECs

Two amendments passed by Lords during report stage

Government plans that would have seen some BTEC courses defunded in England next year have been put on hold after an amendment to the skills bill that protects them for four years was passed in the House of Lords.

Ministers wanted to remove funding approval for all technical qualifications that “overlap” with its new T-Level qualifications from the start of the 2023/24 academic year, but the amendment to the bill—which was passed by 155 votes to 150 on 12 October—prevents that.
