Kathleen Stock says free-speech legislation required at institutions to protect research on tricky topics
The proposed freedom of speech bill is necessary because current legislation protecting academic freedom on campuses is no longer fit for purpose, a high-profile academic has claimed.
Kathleen Stock, a professor of philosophy at the University of Sussex, told MPs on 7 September that the increase in tuition fees at universities in England, combined with increased competition among universities to recruit students, meant institutions had to present “the most PR-friendly face” to students.
