REF 2021: Key shifts in ranking show size matters

Rule changes benefited universities able to boost numbers, analysis of biggest jumps in rank reveal

One of the driving forces behind the shifts in university rankings following the 2021 Research Excellence Framework has been the requirement that institutions submit all staff with a significant responsibility for research.

According to the team behind the REF, the change in methodology compared with the previous exercise in 2014 has meant a broader range of research was captured across the UK.
