REF 2021: Mixed bag for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

Most top institutions keep their positions but smaller universities fall down rankings

The results of the 2021 Research Excellence Framework have been a mixed bag for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with leading universities largely holding their own but smaller institutions faring less well.

In Scotland and Wales, the top universities have held or improved their positions in the 2021 Research Professional News power rankings compared with 2014. Edinburgh and Glasgow have maintained the positions at four and 13, while Cardiff has moved up from 17 to 14.
