REF 2021: Regions make up ground on Golden Triangle

Requirement to submit all staff sees universities outside South East account for more top-flight research

Top-ranking universities in London and South East England account for a smaller share of excellent research in the UK than previously measured, according to the results of the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.

The University of Oxford, UCL and the University of Cambridge retained the top three places in the Research Professional News power ratings, suggesting they will continue to receive the biggest slices of direct government research funding. The REF is used to calculate about £2 billion per year in public funding.
