Change is only the constant in an increasingly turbulent sector
Change may be the only constant in life, but for the UK research sector constant changes are beginning to come with a distinct sense of deja vu.
The editorial in the last edition of Research Fortnight noted that with rows over pensions, another blow for aid research funding and concern over R&D spending promises, “the 2021-22 academic year is looking somewhat familiar”. Since then a government reshuffle that brought yet another new science minister—the fifth person to hold the role in less than four years—has pushed that familiarity into full-on doppelganger territory.
