After a period of tumult, politicians must take a far-future view

The death of Queen Elizabeth II came after a period of shattering change in the UK. 

As the country leaves its period of national mourning, with King Charles III in place as its new monarch, it also leaves a broader period in which vast changes have come at such pace and with such unrelenting frequency that much of what previously seemed solid has melted into air.
