Who should oversee research’s role in the AI revolution?

Some 25 years ago last week, IBM’s Deep Blue computer beat chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov—the first time a world champion had lost to a machine.

In the time since, an entire generation of people have been born, educated, gone to work in artificial intelligence startups and are well on the way to retiring rich (well, some of them). Research has been central to all this.
