Fears Chinese moon mission ‘threatens US space leadership’

Congressional Republican warns that mission to gather rock samples is ominous sign

A top-ranking Republican on the House Science Committee has warned that a Chinese mission to gather rock samples from the moon shows the county is a threat to US leadership in space.

The Chang’e-5 mission, which landed a robot on the lunar surface on 1 December, “is a significant step by China towards their goal of establishing a long-term presence on the Moon”, Frank Lucas said.
