NIH spending more on grants but supporting fewer postdocs

              

Latest data show National Institutes of Health spent $33.3 billion on grants in 2022

The National Institutes of Health increased its spending on grants by more than $1 billion in the 2022 financial year, but the funder reduced its support for postdoctoral researchers.

Publishing an annual snapshot of NIH funding allocations on 1 March, the agency’s deputy director Mike Lauer revealed it had spent $33.3bn of its $45.2bn budget on grants in FY2022, an increase of 3.1 per cent, or $1.02bn, on the previous year.
