Academies call for committee to shape antimicrobials research

Report from US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine was requested by Congress

A major report into tackling antimicrobial resistance has called for the establishment of a dedicated cross-agency committee to brainstorm ways of tackling the problem and fund new innovations.

The report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine was requested by Congress and published on 20 October. It cites estimates that AMR—the declining effectiveness of medicines such as antibiotics in combating bacterial infections—is killing 36,000 people in the United States each year.
