Latest US R&D funding data ‘underscore need to rebalance’

US health department was responsible for over half of 2019 government funding of academic R&D

The life sciences continue to dominate R&D funding at universities in the United States, with research concentrated in a relatively small number of institutions and funded disproportionately by the US health department, according to the latest national statistics.

But a member of the National Science Board (NSB), which advises the US president and Congress, and which produced the Academic Research and Development report published on 14 September, said that the picture needed to change.
