Wellcome says its hands are tied on fossil fuels investments

Funder plans to ditch oil and gas but current investments must continue “for a while”

The UK-based biomedical research charity the Wellcome Trust has defended its stance on fossil fuels, saying binding terms prevent it from rapidly ending its investment in oil and gas companies.

The row is the latest battle over research-related investments supporting activities that cause global warming. Campaigners are increasingly calling on funds—including those run by universities and charities—to divest from fossil fuels, with some success.
