India’s chief scientist challenges scientists to ‘walk’ with society

India’s scientists must focus on tackling the country’s societal challenges, especially if they want to increase the country’s low R&D spend, the government’s chief scientific adviser has said.

Biologist Krishnaswamy VijayRaghavan said Indian scientists appeared to be more deeply connected and inspired by what’s going on in elite institutions in the United States and the UK than the concerns on their own doorstep.

VijayRaghavan was speaking at this year’s Dr ST Lee Public Policy Lecture at the University of Cambridge on 27 November.
