My winning proposals: A Marie-Curie/EMBO double bill

How to handle multiple postdoc fellowship applications

Top tips:

  • Always keep the fellowship reviewers’ ‘three Ps’—person, project and place—in mind as you draft your bid.
  • Time your application wisely if you are about to publish a paper and consider posting on a preprint server if you cannot wait to bid.
  • Ask your proposed hosts for assistance with your bid; remember that they want you to succeed as you will bring in funding.
  • Combine a pre-fellowship site visit with an ‘invited talk’ at the institute to boost your CV.

Many final year PhD students opt to maximise their chances of finding a postdoc placement or fellowship by applying to several simultaneously and Daniel Hurdiss, a researcher at Utrecht University, was no different.
