Scottish research ‘must curb reliance on international fees’

Funding council flags concerns over universities using fees to fund research

The Scottish Funding Council has suggested universities may need to curb their reliance on international students’ fees, even if it means carrying out less research.

In a report published on 20 October, the SFC said there should be reforms to funding models and a focus on the financial sustainability of universities. It singled out the use of income from international students to subsidise research activities as a problem.
