South African humanities awards get pandemic flavour

Senior scientists, under-35s and teams eligible for medals

An annual South African social science and humanities award will focus on contributions to the fight against Covid-19 this year.

This is the first time that the Human Sciences Research Council Medals for the Social Sciences and Humanities will have a thematic focus since its inception in 2016. Nominations for the awards opened on 2 February.

“South Africa’s efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus through, amongst others, behaviour and attitude change, will have been ineffective without the work of [social science and humanities researchers],” the organisers said in a statement.

There are medals for a senior researcher, one under 35 years old, and two team awards. The awards ceremony will take place on 18 March.
