Research for research’s sake wanes under impact agenda

As pressure mounts to promote their work outside the academy, Australian academics call for reinforcements

“Universities are suspected of wasting money, [and] of devoting too much time and money to impractical subjects and research projects.” 

Those words, written more than 20 years ago by historian Michiel Horn, might well have been penned to describe the challenges confronting Australia’s higher education sector today.
