Call for power shift in Germany’s scientific publishing

Physics society proposes elimination of impact factors and demands more transparency over publication costs

The German Physical Society (DPG) has called for a reform of scientific publishing, including abandoning the use of impact factors when hiring academics.

In a position paper, the society outlined a proposed revision of university appointment practices, which it said would strengthen the position of researchers and give scientists a greater role in make decisions for projects. The society said the publication system should be shaped “by scientists for scientists”, including when it comes to hiring academic staff.
