University offers support after Heidelberg shooting

Student opened fire during lecture at medical faculty, killing one and then himself

The University of Heidelberg is preparing psychological support for students and faculty after a student opened fire in a lecture theatre, killing one person and then later himself.

Police said it was unclear why the 18-year-old gunman shot four students shortly after midday on 24 January on the Neuenheimer Feld campus. One victim later died, while the perpetrator fled the lecture theatre and killed himself nearby. In a statement, police said they had secured two guns and around 100 rounds of ammunition.
