Post-Iter fusion demonstration project moving forward

Demo project heading into ‘conceptual design phase’ following expert review

An infrastructure project intended to follow on from the international Iter project in demonstrating the viability of nuclear fusion energy is moving from one seven-year design phase to another, following a successful review of the work done in the first phase.

The Demo project has passed its 2014-20 pre-conceptual design phase and will now move into its 2021-27 conceptual design phase, the European Commission announced on 13 January. The development of the technical basis for the project was carried out by EuroFusion, an organisation that funds fusion research for the EU and Switzerland.
