European AI initiative ‘should use tax-free salaries to lure talent’

Intergovernmental model would protect researchers’ salaries from income tax, says Max Planck Society head

The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems, an initiative to support excellent research into artificial intelligence, should change its legal status so it can offer higher salaries, a research leader has suggested.

Martin Stratmann, president of the Max Planck Society, said at an event on 7 October that Ellis should copy the European Molecular Biology Laboratory by becoming an intergovernmental organisation.
