EU to launch joint R&D spending scheme for hydrogen tech

Countries sign up to initiative enabling them to use public funds to support risky R&D

Twenty-three EU member states have signed a commitment to “work together on large-scale joint investment projects to support the development and deployment of hydrogen technologies”, according to the European Commission.

The Commission said on 17 December that the commitment included the creation of an ‘Important Project of Common European Interest’ for hydrogen technologies. An IPCEI is a legal framework that allows EU member states to channel public funds to cross-border research, innovation and infrastructure projects if such state aid is needed to overcome industry hesitance to invest.
