EU will provide grants and other financial support for public–private energy demonstration projects

The European Commission is extending the EU’s clean-technology investment partnership with Breakthrough Energy, the initiative set up by billionaire businessman and philanthropist Bill Gates to support environmentally sustainable power generation.

The partnership now aims to mobilise new investments of up to €820 million over 2022-26 to build “large-scale, commercial demonstration projects for clean technologies—lowering their costs, accelerating their deployment, and delivering significant reductions in carbon dioxide emissions”, the Commission announced on 2 June.
