Dutch university aims to boost photosynthesis research

Wageningen centre will use €62 million budget to improve plant growth and food production

Wageningen University and Research has signed a letter of intent with a private fund for the establishment of an institute for photosynthesis research.

The goal of the institute, to be set up in collaboration with the Photosynthesis 2.0 Research Fund, will be to improve the absorption of solar energy by food crops, enabling them to grow faster and thereby providing more food for the world. Plants use only about 1 per cent of the sunlight that reaches the earth—but if they could absorb twice as much, they could potentially grow faster and improve global food production, Wageningen said in a statement.
