Government advised to use different strategies when encouraging bottom-up and top-down initiatives
The Netherlands needs two separate funding models for interdisciplinary research in order to properly tackle societal questions, according to a report by a government advice committee.
The AWTI, the Dutch advisory council for science, technology and innovation, published a report this month urging a review of how interdisciplinary research is funded in the country. It said that Dutch academics have a long track record in doing cross-sectoral research, but that government funding schemes often fail to support bottom-up interdisciplinary initiatives by imposing top-down funding conditions.
