Wary welcome for ERA and EEA plans

Commission aims to strengthen and better connect European research and education areas

Academic leaders have cautiously welcomed European Commission plans to develop and unify the European Research Area and the European Education Area. The long-standing initiatives aim to remove idiosyncratic national R&D and education policies that hamper joined-up endeavours and mobility.

The related plans for the ERA and the EEA, published on 30 September, are “two sides of the same coin”, said Ludovic Thilly, chair of the Coimbra Group of universities. “They must be implemented in full synergy and with the unfailing support of European leaders,” he said.
