Millward calls for ‘local strategies’ to improve student opportunities

Fair access director’s call comes as move to University of Birmingham is announced

The Office for Students’ outgoing director for fair access and participation has called on universities to work with colleges to create pathways through academic and technical education, arguing that limiting students’ choices of education routes would be “regressive and divisive”.

In a blog published by the Higher Education Policy Institute think tank on 15 November, Chris Millward said he was “pleased” that discussions around social mobility had turned towards improving options for people in their local areas rather than encouraging them to move away to find opportunities.
