Government refuses to confirm whether ban on “non-essential” aid will affect cash promised for GCRF

The UK’s troubled aid-funded research programmes have been dealt a fresh blow after the government refused to confirm whether a ban on “non-essential” development spending would affect money promised for research.

Researchers working on aid-funded projects have been rocked by cuts in recent years, with some projects under the government’s Global Challenges Research Fund and Newton Fund being cancelled partway through. So there were immediate concerns when the Financial Times reported on 25 July that the Treasury was putting a block on any new payments for overseas aid projects deemed “non-essential”.
