What the next 12 months have in store for researchers

As 2022 drew to a close, many in the research world breathed a little sigh of relief. The past 12 months were packed with unprecedented political shenanigans, funding worries and ongoing industrial action, and the chaos left most hoping for a more peaceful 2023.

Unfortunately, calmer waters are unlikely as huge existing challenges will continue to rock research in the year ahead. The cost of living crisis that is eating into university budgets and staff pay is not going away any time soon, and although the situation in Westminster seems to have stabilised, frosty relations with the EU are still having an impact on UK science.
