Shortly before sitting down with Research Fortnight for this interview, the executive chair of Research England and one of the best-known names in the sector made a big announcement. After leading the national funder since 2017, David Sweeney will be stepping down. In early 2022 his five-year term in one of the most important jobs in UK research will come to an end.
His time as the high-profile figure at the helm of England’s largest public research funder has coincided with major challenges for the sector, not least the fallout from Brexit and the pandemic. With those challenges, and others, set to continue to frame the sector in the next five years, why has he decided to leave now?
