Number of annual doctorates awarded by US universities fell by almost 3,000 in 2021

The number of doctorates awarded by US universities plunged in 2021 amid the Covid-19 pandemic, in the largest fall ever recorded by current monitoring methods.

According to the latest Survey of Earned Doctorates, an annual census conducted by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, the number of doctorate recipients fell by 2,974 from 55,224 in 2020 to 52,250 in 2021, a 5.4 per cent drop.
